Alternative pop singer and songwriter Riley Whittaker recently released her new single “Maybe California”, a conversation around the difficulties of letting go.

“Maybe California” explores the desperate need to hang on to a relationship that’s falling apart, as the narrator tries to navigate different solutions. In trying to avoid the inevitable, the sense of frustration grows as Whittaker repeats “I don’t wanna go” over and over; it’s a simple yet powerful statement that everyone can relate to, one way or another.

The track has a very uplifting quality to it, despite the subject matter; it’s fun and incredibly catchy. Whittaker’s vocals are soft, yet capable to convey different emotions with subtlety, starting off hopeful, then turning frantic towards the chorus, with a sense of resignation at the end. “Maybe California” manages to condense such intense feelings in a short, well crafted pop song.
