Zac is back (again)! Paramore‘s Zac Farro has announced the release of his debut solo album, Operator, set to drop on July 18 via his very own label, Congrats Records. At just 35 years old, Farro is a seasoned veteran in music, with a robust career spanning over 20 years. In addition to five studio albums with Paramore, Farro has worked under the moniker Halfnoise since 2017, with four studio albums and three EPs under his belt. Operator will be his first project under his own name.

Along with the album announcement, Farro released the first single titled “My My,” with a striking visualizer. The song is wrapped in warm, fuzzy bass notes layered with lilting guitar. Listeners will enjoy Farro’s signature soft vocal performance. Unsurprisingly, it’s also very rhythmically pleasing, with a mix of a dry kit sound and the more acoustic sound of maybe a bongo that adds sweet accents throughout. “My My” is a soothing, country-folk tune that Farro admits was the hardest to make. In his words:

‘My My’ is a personal song about witnessing a loved one try to let go of someone they care for deeply. That kind of silent pain. This song holds a lot of weight and captures those moments of reflection and processing that run throughout the album.

Operator will explore challenging themes like anxiety, family issues and miscommunications under the comforting blanket of a 70s easy rock sound that Farro has embraced during tough seasons of life. Farro worked with close friends Josh Gilligan and Chancey Pierce on Operator, and shared that he let vibes and intuition lead the way in its creation for the first time. With no premeditated influence or theme, the trio seems to have conducted a successful experiment in trusting their musical gut.

Laced with raw, heartfelt lyrics and lush production, Farro asks a question we all face at some point: “How can we better connect with other people?” On the album’s opener and title track, he sings, “Finally got the message / You’ve been trying to send me / But I keep on missing the point.” His writing speaks to a longing to quiet the noise in his mind and just enjoy the community of people around him.

Operator will be available to stream wherever you listen to music on July 18.
