If you’re looking for a new dance track for your summer playlist, check out Emei’s new single “Cynical.” The EDM-adjacent, alt-pop release features a crazy music video directed by Aser Santos Jr.

The song details a self-sabotage relationship with oneself, reflecting on times when things go well and how there is an odd comfort when things go wrong. The song begins with heavy bass and electronic synths before cutting to Emei’s voice and a faint backing track. She describes how she’s doing well but jumps into the chorus, asking “Why do I feel at peace when / it’s difficult”. Her question is followed by the same heavily produced intro that makes people want to throw their hands in the air and jump, as seen in the video.

The video pairs well with the song, as Emei is alone in some shots, dancing and performing in front of a crowd during the self-reflection lines of the chorus. She is alone for the verses in rooms of various colors and personalities, signifying a scatterbrained state. Aser Santos Jr. understood the balance of chaos and quiet necessary to bring this song to visual life.
