Pinegrove doesn’t play rooms this small in size. When local radio station Lightning 100 announced a “Night with Pinegrove” at the 500-person capacity EXIT/IN, tickets sold out instantly as fans of the bands descended upon Nashville for what would be their final live date of 2019. Pinegrove is somewhat recognized for having a fervent fanbase; tattoos of the squares from the Cardinal album cover were prevalent among the concertgoers, and the energy was palpable in the air for the Montclair band to take the stage.

After a stellar opening set from Nashville’s own Grumpy, the band walked on stage and dove right into Skylight hit “Darkness”. What proceeded was a 20+ song set that hit on every inch of their discography, which was sure to please any old or new fan in the audience. When the band broke out “Namesake”, an older song from their & EP, the crowd went wild when Evan Stephens Hall and new member Nick Levine tore into the dueling guitar solo that is the centerpiece of the song. Evan and the band didn’t speak often, instead punctuating their songs with brief “thank yous” and a sort of silent warmth that showed how happy they were to be there. Amidst the set were new songs from the forthcoming Marigold, an album that has seen some delay due to the band’s recent signing to Rough Trade in August of this year. However, the new songs fit in just as perfectly to the sets as singalongs like “Old Friends”, proving that the rising band is going to have a meteoric 2020 when Marigold sees the light of day.
