Weekly Roundup: Feb 14

Date:

Every week the Melodic staff assembles a Weekly Roundup playlist of songs we can’t stop listening to. Whether you need some motivation, are falling in love, or just went through a bad breakup, we have something for your ears on this list.
Here are some of the highlights:

1. “Wake Up and Get It” – Sydney Raneé
Just like the title implies, this is the perfect song to start out your day. Packed with expert vocals, an instrumental that is both smooth and subtly energized, and words of motivation (“No more let down, no more blues/ Live my life with no excuses/ Will I just accept and see/ That the whole time it has been me”), we think it’s safe to say you’ll be listening to this one on repeat.

2. “Boyfriend” – Dove Cameron
Dove Cameron’s latest single starts off sultry— and dare we say jazz-influenced?— before hitting a massive chorus that has her declaring, “I can be a better boyfriend than him/ I can do the shit that he never did” before getting to our favorite line: “Plus all my clothes will fit.” We’re definitely feeling some Billie- Happier-Than-Ever vibes on this one, but there’s also something unique about Dove’s delivery that will have you coming back for more.

3. “The Joker and The Queen” – Ed Sheeran ft. Taylor Swift
Ed and Tay Tay are back to collaborating and picking up right where “Everything Has Changed” left off. While their first duet evoked images of falling in love while doodling your crush’s name all over hearts in the margins of your notebook, “The Joker and the King” is a more subdued and mature view of romance. The card metaphors are a-plenty in this one, but they work and paint a beautiful picture of a tried and true romance: “When I fold you see the best in me/ the joker and the queen.

4. “What’s Wrong” – half•alive
From the beginning *click* of this song, we were hooked. We’d be surprised if half•alive isn’t influenced by alt-J, but that’s certainly not a bad thing! With a chorus that starts with a shout of “yippee-kay-yay,” we recommend blasting this one with the windows down.

5. “No Romeo” – Dylan
On her latest single, Dylan offers sage advice to a friend who’s suffering from a break-up with a – surprise, surprise- big jerk. “He’s no Romeo/ He’s never gonna be enough for you… He’s never gonna give you all the love you know that you deserve.” Thank you for putting words of empowerment to such a catchy bop, Dylan.
