Chaz Bear, professionally known by moniker Tori y Moi, will debut Unerthed: Hole Erth Unplugged, a revamped version of his 2024 album, set to arrive on streaming platforms on Sept. 19 via Dead Oceans.

With this upcoming release, Tori y Moi’s critically acclaimed eighth studio album Hole Erth (2024) will get reimagined sounds. On Unerthed: Hole Erth Unplugged, the tracks will be rearranged for guitar, piano, drums and strings. This new project shifts the original LP into a new direction, influenced by hyperpop, rap, rock and 2000s emo.

“The idea to begin this project came while listening to Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged record. I love how the rearrangement brought out so many intricacies of their songwriting and gave context to the original recordings and the decisions made… Americana has always been a major theme in my music. I asked myself what could be more edgy than Rap-Rock turned Alt-Country? Hole Erth and Unerthed was meant to be a dual album from the beginning, the vision is complete. Enjoy…” – Chaz Bear, Toro y Moi

Inspired by psych-funk and synth-pop, the first single from this upcoming project is the second track, “CD-R (unerthed),”released a month in advance of the “unplugged” album. A throwback to the 2010s, the alternative artist reflects on life at the beginning stages of Toro y Moi, a nod to the technology and themes of his formative days.

“I remember burning CD-Rs / Outside every single dive bar / Every windshield in the parking lot / Kinkos boxes filling up the trunk / We broke down on the 15-501 / Triple A had to come and pull us up out the mud / Overwhelmed, all the merch was still in the trunk / We were wondering if the tour was still fucked.”
