The Dreaded Laramie wants to write “Breakup Songs” with you…

Date:

Nashville-based The Dreaded Laramie have released a glittery, emotional, and attitude-filled “Breakup Songs,” riddled with punk influence and a sickly sweetness that will attract anyone who has ever had their heart close to broken.

Whether you grew up on Paramore, Indigo Girls, or Bikini Kill, vocalist MC Cunningham‘s femme sound invites listeners to lean into the anger, hope, and desperation that emerges from a breakup. Her unique vocal inflections convey every imaginable emotion, soaring overtop of the gritty guitar tone and crashing drums that fill the chorus.

The drumming and guitar have in the past been described as “macho” aspects of the band’s sound, but a twinkling staccato piano part emerges right near the end of the song amidst the chaos of the arrangement, adding just the right amount of texture. The backing vocals also vary in intensity throughout the piece, leaving no stone unturned.

Of the inspiration behind the song, Cunningham recounted, “I wanted to write a song that I would’ve been embarrassed to show my ex while we were together.”

The track tackles these deeply-rooted emotions with clever lyrics that carry nuanced meanings, creating a genre-bending power piece.

“I am super proud of the result,” said Cunningham. “It is a song that feels and sounds like emotional liberation to me.”

This is the band’s first release since signing to Smartpunk Records, and opens an exciting door for what’s to come in 2024.
