Sundried Whales navigate the aftermath on “Socks”

Date:

Sundried Whales is an alternative band based in Hamilton, Ontario, founded by Emman Alavata and Cache Kadlec-Smith. The Whales started out as a lo-fi project; now they’re releasing vibrant indie-rock bangers that are still a little rough around the edges (in the best way). The band released a self-titled EP in 2022, featuring emotive and energetic tracks like “I’m So Tired” and “Always”. Today, they return with a new single, “Socks“.

“(“Socks”) is about the aftermath of breaking up with someone who is very toxic, and the trials and tribulations of being a divorced cat dad.” The honest lyrics and charged vocals are moving, especially during the second verse. Alavata sings (nearly screams):

Every day while you smile with no meaning /
I drink ’til I’m crying by the end of the night /
This heart full of holes that you’ve threatened to marry /
It sleeps on the driveway as you darken my mind.

During the bridge he admits, “You know I’ll never be alright.” At least he has his cat.
