LOTTO is a record increasingly insistent on human connection, physical recording, breaking systematic cycles, and genuinely crying out for shared experiences. It’s no surprise that they are gutting a body of water (TAGABOW) are once again stepping up their game, pushing the shoegaze genre more and more into the limelight. The band is back with another banger, “rl stine,” presumably the last before the imminent release of LOTTO.
A singular riff starts off the track before exploding into a sound both powerful and crushing. This is true shoegaze, this is noise, only cut by lead singer Doug Dulgarian’s hazy, psyched-out vocals. Short, succinct, ephemeral lyrics. A sound reminiscent of the band’s earlier tracks but with a much more calculated sense of songwriting. Coming off the release of earlier singles for the album, “rl stine” has its own, almost hopeful sound. The voiceovers are out of the picture and a conversational, poetic tone takes over.
LOTTO comes out on October via Julia’s War Records, ATO Records, and Smoking Room.
