Cherokee Social are lost in meditation in “A Never Ends”

Date:

Cherokee Social‘s debut EP, The Garden, captures a tranquil indie pop sound that establishes the tone and image of the duo from Denver. The EP’s song “A Never Ends” exemplifies this mood with spaced-out instruments and relaxed vocals reminiscent of Dominic Fike and Still Woozy.

The relaxed and meditative state of the song is set up within the first few seconds with heavily reverbed drum beats and electric guitars. By keeping the drums simple and repetitive, there’s a permeating sense of familiarity even as the guitars experiment with the large space. Most of the instrumentation feels decorative, like distant plucks in the post-chorus and spaced-out sampled vocals, so as not to give the rhythm too much power over the pace, keeping a relaxed tone. Despite being a fairly short song, you get too lost in the hypnotic state of “A Never Ends” to realise how little time has passed.

The vocals follow the flow of the instrumentation with filters and choruses layered on top of one another. There is a bigger focus on the melody of the vocals rather than the lyrics themselves, which helps the song keep its tranquil tone. Still, there is an air of nostalgia in the lyrics with mentions of high school “bleachers” and love that “never ends.”

Cherokee Social’s debut EP sees the indie pop band establish themselves within the Denver music scene, and “A Never Ends” gives a taste of what’s to come from the duo.
